This is Part 4 of 5 in our Klossus series, and today we tackle three questions at once: who — or what — are the key factions, what is the economic system holding this shattered island together, and what myths and legends shape the souls of its people. There is a great deal to cover, brave record-keepers and lore-masters, so let us jump right into it.

A faction is not a coat of arms on a wall. It is a living engine of choice. Each group below carries a desire, a fear, a method, and a crack running through its middle. That crack is where your knights can push, pry, and change the course of the war.

The laws of Klossus apply to every faction: nothing is inherited, Helot Hamlets and free Hamlets are the scoreboard, and the Regent’s arrival ends the game.

The Knightly Resistance

The Order of the Broken Horn

Type: Knightly resistance order

Named for the consecration horns the conquerors smashed on day one of the occupation. The Order formed on day two.

Desire: Drive the Overlord out before the Regent’s sails appear.

Fear: Becoming what they fight — knights who seize Hamlets “for protection” look like warlords to frightened farmers.

Method: Raids from sea coves and mountain passes. Every freed Helot Hamlet gets a broken horn carved into its well-stone.

Internal Disagreement: Hold or strike. The Wardens want to defend freed Hamlets and slowly tighten the ring around the capital. The Spearhead faction wants one bold strike at the city. Your players will be asked to choose — and return to ashes if they choose wrong.

Collides with: The Last Oath, the Saltking’s Coves, and the Hill Lords.

The Last Oath

Type: Old-world loyalist knights

The surviving guardsmen of the fallen king. In Klossus, the economy is not a price list. It is a battlefield, and every coin, promise, and whispered secret shows you who is winning.

Let me walk you through it layer by layer, from the Overlord’s counting tables down to the witch’s hearth.

The Great Exchange: Coin as a Weapon of Conquest

The first thing the Overlord did after the king fell was not burn a village. He changed the money.

Every coin of old Klossus was declared worthless overnight. Citizens were ordered to turn in their savings at the Overlord’s counting houses and receive the new regime’s coin in return. The rate is thirty parts new for every hundred parts old. A family that went to sleep with a hundred silver woke to find it worth thirty. A merchant’s lifetime of labor shrank to a third before breakfast.

This is not clumsy policy, my lore masters. It is deliberate. Poverty is quieter than rebellion. A starving family spends its days chasing bread, not plotting revolt. The Great Exchange made the whole island dependent on the conqueror’s coin in a single stroke.

And the old coins? Possession is a crime. Trading in them is death. The Overlord’s patrols search purses, homes, and graves. Some families still hide their grandmothers’ silver in wall-stones and well-shafts, worth nothing to spend and everything to remember.

Here’s the micro-lesson: when you build an occupation, make the oppression economic as well as military. Soldiers can be ambushed. Hunger cannot.

Table hook: A Helot Hamlet’s headman is caught with a jar of old coins. He will hang at dawn unless someone proves the coins were planted, or unless the knights break him out and turn a quiet village into an open rebel one.

Marks of the Broken Horn: Trading in Hope

The knights cannot match the Overlord coin for coin. So they trade in something he can never mint: hope.

The knights of the Broken Horn deal in promises, oaths, and protection. A farmer who hides a wounded knight is promised shelter when the Iron Tithe comes calling. A smith who forges blades in secret is promised his forge back when Klossus is free. In a land where nothing is inherited and every title is earned, a knight’s word is the only credit that still means something.

When a promise needs to be written down, the knights issue Marks of the Broken Horn. These are notes stamped with the cracked horn of the Order, redeemable for true currency once order is restored. They are not coins. They are a bet on the future.

Compare them to the Overlord’s new coin, and you see the whole war in miniature:

Currency

Backed By

Value Depends On

Overlord’s coin

Fear and force

The occupation holding

Marks of the Broken Horn

Oaths and honor

The resistance winning

Every Mark a farmer accepts is a quiet vote for the knights. Every Mark a knight fails to honor is a crack in the people’s faith.

Try this at the table: Track the Marks your players issue. When a Hamlet is freed, its people come forward to redeem them. A knight who spent recklessly may find his honor stretched thinner than his purse.

Barter: The Economy of the Survivors

Between the Overlord’s coin and the knights’ promises lies the real economy of Klossus: barter.

Most daily trade among survivors happens hand to hand. Olive oil for a mended net. A goat for a winter’s worth of grain. A night’s shelter for a day in the fields. Barter leaves no ledger for the Iron Tithe to tax and no coins for patrols to seize.

This is the economy of endurance. It belongs to the free Hamlets, the Helot Hamlets, the Ash Road Folk, and anyone who has decided that survival matters more than whose face is stamped on the money.

The mistake to avoid: don’t make barter generic. Decide what each region produces and lacks. The meadow ring has grain but no salt. The coves have salt but no grain. Scarcity creates trade routes, and trade routes create adventures.

Secrets and Favors: The Witch’s Ledger

Last, and strangest of all, comes the hidden market. Witches and magic users trade in secrets and favors.

A seer of the Drowned Spring will not take your coin. She will take the name of the officer who burned your village, or a promise to carry a sealed letter through the mountain pass. A Ferryman of Souls might ease your father’s restless ghost in exchange for a favor he will collect years from now, at the worst possible moment.

This fits our magic perfectly. Magic in Klossus is slow, costly, and socially dangerous, so its currency should be just as risky. A debt of coin can be paid. A debt of favor can follow a knight for the rest of his life.

Table hook: A knight owes a witch one favor. In the final hour before a great battle, she comes to collect, and what she asks for would cost him the field.

The Takeaway

The economy of Klossus is four economies at war. The Overlord rules through fear and coin. The knights resist through oaths and hope. The survivors endure through barter. The witches bargain in secrets and debts. When you design your own world, ask what each faction trades, what backs its value, and who gets hurt when that value fails. Answer those questions, and your economy will tell your story for you.

Now that we know what the people of Klossus trade to stay alive, we turn to what they believe. Next, we dig into the myths and legends that shape this shattered island.

What Myths and Legends Shape the World?

Draw your cloaks tight, lore masters. We have mapped the land, named the factions, and counted the coins. Now we go deeper — into the stories Klossus whispers to itself when the fire burns low.

Myths are never only campfire tales. They justify rulers, explain taboos, and remind the living what they owe the dead. Some are true. Some have grown larger than the events that inspired them. From Arthurian legend I borrowed the sleeping hero and the sacred blade that chooses its bearer. From Crete I took the bull-king, the labyrinth, and the memory of a sea empire that drowned in a single day. I did not copy them — I let them bleed together until something new crawled out.

GM note: Never present a myth as settled fact. Offer rumors, rival versions, and partial truths. Let the players argue, and keep the answers to yourself until the right moment demands them.

The Horns That Were Earned, Then Broken

The oldest story says a great bull rose from the sea, walked inland, and lay down at the center of the island. The first king built his palace between its horns. The sacred bargain was simple: the king’s favor was earned, season by season, through deeds and justice — never simply inherited.

When the conquerors came, they smashed the horns on the first day.

Whether the horns fell because the old kings had already lost the blessing, or because a faithful people were betrayed, depends entirely on who is telling the story. Both versions are alive in Klossus, and both are marching toward each other with swords drawn.

GM note: A shard of the original bronze horns makes a powerful relic — wanted by almost every faction for different reasons. Let it appear when the players need a complication, not a solution.

Legends That May Be True

The King Beneath the Labyrinth. Something sleeps below Klossus — old, patient, and not entirely human. The people say it will wake when the island has suffered enough. Whether that waking would be salvation or catastrophe, the songs do not agree.

The Axe in the Drowned Spring. Somewhere beneath the sacred spring, a double-axe rests in stone. The Sisters say it stirs — slightly, slowly — whenever the island moves toward freedom. It does not answer to blood. It answers to deeds.

The Bronze Watchman. The outer cliffs were once guarded by something vast and tireless. Fishermen still hear heavy steps on the rocks at night. Nobody who has gone looking has come back with a clear answer.

GM note: Use these legends as long threads, not quick reveals. Drop a clue here, a strange sound there, a door that should not be open. The mystery is worth more than the answer.

Three Questions for Every Myth You Build

Every legend earns its place when it changes what people do. Before you write one, ask:

Who tells it, and what do they gain? Myths always serve someone’s interests.

Who tells it differently? Rival versions generate conflict and fuel factions.

What does it make people do? If the myth doesn’t move anyone, cut it.

Klossus now has its ground, its masters, its threats, its coin, its factions, and its legends. Next week, in Part 5, we take out the polishing cloth — testing every piece against every other and making sure this island is ready for knights to walk its roads.

If you would like to revisit past articles, look no further than the Geek Opera Index!

Watch the shadows, my friends.
