Victor Frankenstein (2015): Review
I use a skull and crosses, rating system, where one is the lowest ranking and three is the highest in each category. Crosses judge quality and acting/plot believability, while skulls relate to chills, thrills, and basic horror elements.
2.6 Skulls; 3.0 Crosses
This movie, released in 2015, is a retelling of the story of Victor Frankenstein and Igor. It stars James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe, who give strong performances in their respective roles. The monster in the film is not the focus, but rather the recklessness of the doctor who created it. The horror elements of the movie are somewhat predictable, but there are also scenes that highlight the darker aspects of humanity, such as the circus and the eager financial backer. Overall, the movie is entertaining and has a chilling atmosphere.
I very much enjoyed the movie. If you are a fan of the novel and have read about Mary Shelly’s life, you cannot help but discover a plethora of nods, both gentle and in your face. It was enjoyable, entertaining, and all about Victor Frankenstein, as the title would lead one to believe. Anyone who goes into this movie thinking its going to be about a monster rampaging through the countryside will be disappointed. And also, they have not read the novel, either.
