The Banana Splits Movie: Review

I use a skull and crosses, rating system, where one is the lowest ranking and three is the highest in each category. Crosses judge quality and acting/plot believability, while skulls relate to chills, thrills, and basic horror elements.

2.2 Skulls; 2.6 Crosses

Growing up, I watched a variety of children’s shows, but The Banana Splits was not one of them, despite being a popular Hanna-Barbera program. Recently, my wife suggested we watch The Banana Splits Movie, a horror film based on the childhood show. Although I had initially dismissed it as a waste of time, I decided to give it a chance.

For those who grew up with the show and believed the characters to be harmless, the film may have a different impact. In my opinion, it was not the worst horror movie I have seen, as I have encountered worse, such as Leprechaun and Troll 2. The movie followed basic horror storytelling rules and was fairly predictable. It would be suitable for adult parties, but not for children due to its violent and gory scenes.

One aspect of the film that surprised me was the level of character growth and change, which was well-written. Overall, the ending was satisfying, although not particularly original.
