Let me tell you a story that touched my heart deeply. Once, a young boy named Timmy found himself walking between two houses both belonging to his closest family, carrying a handful of toys. It was summertime, and the sun was bright in the sky. Having played all morning, he was now going to play all afternoon. It was not just the place that mattered to him, but the people who resided there. He was young enough that most of his kin were still living. He recalled that he had never been happier before or since. In that moment, he looked up at the sky and made a promise never to forget how to play. This memory stayed with him throughout his life and inspired him to create games that allow us to play freely, without fear of the consequences.
As I was perusing an old episode of the Dick Cavett Show, I found myself entranced by the interview with the illustrious Kirk Douglas. And yet, amidst the captivating discussion, a single remark transported me back to Timmy’s tale.
I listened to Kirk Douglas speak of the importance of maintaining a childish part of oneself, I couldn’t help but think the same must be true of game designers. He was speaking on the matter of acting, but the same should be true for any creative endeavor: “It isn’t a manly profession; it’s a childish profession. You can’t be a complete grown-up adult and be an actor; you have to have a childish part of you. I mean, after all, if I were a sophisticated adult how could I say… here I am fighting evil…”Life can be far too serious at times, and we all need a respite from reality, an opportunity to seek excitation elsewhere. Games offer us the chance to imagine ourselves as great heroes, to embark on adventures that are truly our own.
I sometimes find myself too serious, making it a challenge for me to fully immerse into a game. However, when I embarked upon my journey with Scaldcrow Games: Worlds of Pulp™, I was pleasantly surprised by how easily I was able to delve into the realm of nearly free-form roleplay.
