31 Days ofHalloween: Eastwick’s Bewitching Tale
Witches of Eastwick (1987)
****** (6 out of 10 stars)
Starring: Jack Nicholson, Cher, Susan Sarandon, and Michelle Pfeiffer.
Having watched this film last night, I find myself reflecting on it today. It’s a step away from my usual horror favorites, as the 1980s were rife with films serving primarily as celebrity showcases. This film falls into that category, and despite the book’s critical acclaim, the story struggles under the sheer weight of its star-studded cast.
The narrative revolves around three women in Eastwick who long for a man with certain appealing traits. Little do they know, their collective presence awakens latent witch-like powers, inadvertently summoning the charismatic and flamboyant Daryl Van Horne. What ensues is a wild, albeit slightly awkward, journey through the plot.
For those seeking the atmospheric chills of a Halloween movie, this film might not hit the mark. Its ironic conclusion lacks the depth and consequence typical of more robust horror narratives, underscoring its identity crisis—it’s not a true horror film. Instead, it dances in a dark comedy space, peppered with elements of horror and fantasy, carving out a niche all its own.
A word of caution for families: the film’s mature themes might not be suitable for younger viewers. Think of it as an 80s exploitation flick reimagined as a star-powered blockbuster.
But let’s not dwell solely on the negatives. For the right audience, this movie can be a lively romp. The over-the-top performances from its star-studded cast are exactly what one might expect, offering something for fans of spicier comedies.
While predictable at times, this doesn’t detract from its entertainment value. Though I wouldn’t rush to watch it again, I don’t regret the initial viewing. Enjoy it for what it is, and as long as you don’t scrutinize the premise too heavily, it proves to be an enjoyable watch.
Love this movie.
The artwork is amazing,
Yes, all true. As a Cher, Sarandon, Pfeiffer, and Nicholson fan, still one of my favorites just for sheer silly fun.
It was great fun, just a deviation from my usual Halloween fare. It did check all of the boxes and score higher than a few more traditional Halloween movies.
