18 Years of Scaldcrow Games: A Heartfelt Thanks from Your Fellow Soul Gamers

July 4th marks the 18th anniversary of Scaldcrow Games—a wild, wonderful journey that started not as a business plan, but as a dream shared by a handful of friends who just didn’t want the game to end. I still remember walking into Origins in 2007, clutching stacks of The Dark Fantasy of Sundrah, my heart pounding with a mix of terror and excitement. We weren’t a company in the corporate sense—just a scrappy bunch with big ideas, late-night playtests, and an unshakable love for telling stories at the table.

Today, looking back, it feels like no time has passed at all. Sure, the hair is a little grayer and the dice bags a little heavier, but our mission hasn’t changed: make it easier for friends to come together, spin wild yarns, and create the sort of adventures you talk about for years.

Remembering Our Beginnings

Sundrah wasn’t built on market research. It was built on kitchen tables, offbeat inspiration, and that spark Soul Gamers share—the feeling that rolling those dice with good people is the heart of everything. We didn’t have massive print runs. We had fans who quickly became friends and sessions that ran ‘til sunrise.

And from those humble roots, we kept building. New settings, bigger pulp adventures, and mechanics fine-tuned with every play session. Worlds of Pulp grew out of our collective craving for wild action, two-fisted heroes, and that cinematic “anything goes” magic only tabletop can deliver.

Shape the Story: Tools by Gamers, for Gamers

One of the things I’m proudest of is Shape the Story. It isn’t some mysterious system—it’s a toolbox of genre guidelines and random tables, crafted to make GMs’ lives a little easier and to help any group, with any ruleset, light the fuse on their next big story. We wrote it for anybody hungry for story prompts, unexpected twists, and ways to expand their adventures on the fly. There’s no gatekeeping here—just an open invitation to make the next tale uniquely yours.

Eighteen Years Together

Eighteen years isn’t just a number to me. It’s decades of dice rolls and laughter, setbacks and breakthroughs, playtests that derailed into all-night debates, and, above all, memories shared with some of the best Soul Gamers I’ve had the honor to call friends. Some of you have been along for almost the whole ride. Others just picked up a Scaldcrow title for the first time. However and whenever you showed up, thank you.

Your feedback, your stories, and your table’s wildest moments are what keep Scaldcrow alive. We didn’t get here by ourselves. It’s always been about you—the thinkers, dreamers, and dice-slingers who just can’t wait to see what’s around the next corner.

Looking Ahead—with Gratitude and Excitement

So, what’s next? Well, there’s plenty bubbling under the surface—new tools, wild ideas, and some truly thrilling secrets I can’t spill just yet. But I promise they’re coming, and they’ll carry forward everything we value: imagination, friendship, and the power of a well-timed plot twist.

For now, I just want to say thank you. Thanks for sticking it out through thick and thin, for making our little corner of the gaming world a place where stories never really end. Here’s to late nights, new friends, and the promise that Scaldcrow’s best days are still to come.

Raise a glass, roll some dice, and get ready—because the adventure doesn’t stop here. Stay tuned for the ride and those special announcements just over the horizon.

With all my gratitude,

T. Glenn Bane and the Scaldcrow crew—your fellow Soul Gamers
