Short Plots and Long Winter Nights

Hey, role-playing Comancheros! As the winter months drag on, many of us turn towards gaming as a means to push through. The long nights are broken by the loud cackles of laughter from riotous gaming tables as the players meet the machinations of crafty GMs head-on. Longer nights mean longer sessions and the opportunity to start and end plots in a single sitting. As a GM, you have the power to make or break a game, and the plot you create plays a huge role in this. So, I’m here to give you some tips and tricks to enhance your winter games, and I’m gonna do it Danny Jackson style!

Here are my top ten tips for GMs to create and enhance simple plots:

1. Keep It Simple, Stupid!

First things first, keep your plot simple, dude! Don’t make it too complicated and confusing for your players. Remember, you’re not writing a novel, you’re creating a series of events that will unfold over a few hours.

2. Build Some Killer Characters

A successful plot depends on the strength of its characters, dude! It’s your job to bring your NPCs to life and give each character a unique personality, backstory, and motivation. This will help the players to connect with them on an emotional level, making the plot more meaningful.

3. Use Cliffhangers Like a Boss

Cliffhangers are an excellent way to keep the players on the edge of their seats, dude! End a session on a dramatic reveal or a plot twist, and your players will be eagerly anticipating the next session.

4. Use Setting to Your Advantage

The setting is an essential aspect of any plot, dude. It creates the atmosphere, determines the pacing, and sets the tone for the game. Use the environment as a character in your plot, bro!

5. Incorporate Player Goals, Dude

A successful plot should incorporate the goals of the players, man. Encourage your players to create personal goals for their characters, like finding a lost treasure or defeating a villain. Incorporating these goals into your plot will make the game more personal and enhance the players’ experience.

6. Don’t Be Afraid to Go Off the Rails

Sometimes the best plots come from going off the rails, man! Don’t be afraid to let your players take the lead and see where the story takes them.

7. Keep the Pace Up, bro

Longer nights mean longer sessions, so keep the pace up, dude! Don’t let the game drag on and on, or your players will lose interest.

8. Add Some Humor, Dude

Laughter is the best medicine, bro! Add some humor to your plot to keep your players engaged and having a good time.

9. Give Your Players Some Choices, Man

Don’t be a control freak, dude! Give your players some choices and let them decide the direction of the plot.

10. End with a KA-BANG!!!

Last but not least, end your plot with a bang, dude! Give your players a satisfying conclusion that leaves them wanting more.

So, there you have it, dice fiends! Ten tips from yours truly, to help you create memorable plots that will keep your players engaged and excited for the next session. Game-On!
