Adventures at Mythic Con

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of attending Mythic Con in Charlotte, NC. It’s been quite a few years since my last visit when it was still known as MACE. This convention has always been a beacon for gaming enthusiasts and a hub for discovering new games and gamers. This was my second time attending without bringing a product in hand. In the early days of Scaldcrow Games, I first visited to explore it as a potential venue to showcase my TTRPG, The Dark Fantasy of Sundrah. Back then, the energy was palpable, with people buzzing in and out, laughter echoing through the halls, and a genuine sense of fun in the air.

Much has changed since those days. I’ve put that initial game on the back burner and shifted my focus to the Worlds of Pulp and the original Bare Bones System. This year, I returned to Mythic Con with two goals: to scout it once more as a potential release venue for my upcoming game and to reconnect with an old college friend. I was also delighted by the convenience of the location, with great food options nearby that allowed me to enjoy delicious meals without moving my car and sacrificing my parking spot.

Naturally, the games were a significant part of the experience. I signed up for four different sessions and, while not every game made it to my list of favorites, I was genuinely glad to be part of them. The rooms were bustling with activity, and the thunderous chatter, dice rolling, and cheers made it challenging to keep up with everything happening in a single game. But the atmosphere was infectious, and the enthusiasm of the fans was unmistakable. The GMs varied in skill, and I tip my hat to each of them, as stepping into the role of GM at a convention is no small feat and can be quite daunting.

I am definitely planning to return next year, this time with new products in tow. Although I caught glimpses of a few familiar faces from years past, I missed seeing many others. Whether absent from this event or no longer with us, they were all missed, and I hope to reunite with them in the future.

Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, events like Mythic Con continue to recover and are on the path to thriving once again. It’s heartening to see the resilience of the gaming community and its unwavering passion. As we move forward, I remain optimistic about the future of the industry and look forward to witnessing its ongoing growth and evolution. Here’s to more conventions, more games, and more cherished connections in the years to come!

It has been many years since I attended a gaming con. Matter of fact, it may have been when you were at MACE with DFoS. I wish I was there this year to visit with you my friend. I am planning on going to Gen Con next year. I have always wanted to go and I am not getting any younger. My role playing group is also planning to come with me. I wish you well and hope to see you in the near future.
