Frights and Fables: Bloom Beneath the Ice

“The Bloom Beneath the Ice”
Scenario Overview:
The setting is an isolated arctic research base known as Station Forseti, located on a frozen expanse that has recently been disturbed by geological activity. A team of researchers uncovered a strange, fossilized plant embedded deep beneath the ice. However, what was once thought to be dead has come alive, feeding off the warmth of those around it and taking control of their bodies to expand its influence.
The players are recruited by Eli Hayes, a rugged and earnest member of the Veil Keepers, an underground organization sworn to protect the innocent from the hidden machinations of sinister forces. Eli warns that a corporate entity, Notherion Corp, which secretly funds Station Forseti, intends to weaponize the sentient plant for biotechnological advancements. With limited time before conditions worsen, the players must investigate the base and eradicate the danger.
Opening Scene:
The adventure begins as the players travel to Station Forseti by snowcat in near-blizzard conditions, guided by Eli. Clouds blot out the moonlight, the only illumination coming from their dim headlights and the station’s eerie glow on the horizon.
Eli briefs the players:
“Forseti’s gone dark. Last I heard from the researchers, the plant was… growing, and some of their team had fallen ill. Notherion won’t send in a rescue. Not until they’re sure they can contain their precious experiment. We’re the only hope for the people still alive in there. Just… don’t trust anyone, not even the survivors. We may not be able to save them all.”
The players reach the base through the howling winds, its halls already carrying an unnerving warmth despite the icy exterior.
Encounter 1: Rooted Shadows
The players explore the base, starting in the main facility. The power flickers intermittently, casting long shadows down the metallic corridors. Strange vine-like tendrils clutch at ceilings and walls, pulsating with faint warmth. The deeper they go, the more unsettling the signs of life become.
Inside the research lab, they find Dr. Audrey Sinclair, one of the station’s lead scientists, delirious and trembling. She’s pale, her exposed arms veined with dark green lines trailing from a reddish splotch on her neck. She warns them frantically, gasping:
“It spreads… through heat and blood. Don’t… don’t let it touch you.”
Before they can act, one of her colleagues, now completely overtaken, shambles in. The once-human host moves unnaturally, its body bent and stiff, thin vines sprouting from its fingertips. It lunges at the players while trying to use strangling tendrils to infect them.
Combat Encounter:
- The Host-spawned Creature
- Features erratic, jerky movements and flailing tendrils capable of reaching beyond normal melee range.
- Its weak spot lies in the exposed core where the plant has anchored itself inside the host’s chest.
- Environmental hazards include lab equipment that sparks and shatters, creating pools of dangerous liquid nitrogen or fire hazards in the confined space.
Once defeated, the host collapses into a pile of brittle vines. Dr. Sinclair, if questioned, reveals that one of the researchers tried to destroy the plant’s core within the Geothermal Lab, but they never came back. Dr. Sinclair collapses shortly after, an obvious victim of the plant’s influence.
Encounter 2: The Blooming Core
Following Dr. Sinclair’s desperate clue, the players descend into the Geothermal Lab, where the plant is thriving. This part of the station is sweltering and suffused with the sound of faint heartbeat-like thuds vibrating through the walls. The players find what can only be described as The Core. The vampiric plant’s central mass is grotesque, blending plant-like growths with twitching remnants of its victims’ bodies. Vines stretch into ventilation shafts and cracks in the walls, evidence of its growing reach beyond the station.
The players also find Dr. Victor Mannen, a corporate operative posing as a scientist. Equipped with an environmental hazard suit, he has a makeshift lab set up nearby. He explains that Notherion Corp ordered him to study the plant. With icy indifference, he offers them a choice:
- Help contain and capture the plant for Notherion’s research and gain its favor.
- Destroy the plant, defying the corporation but halting its rapid spread before escape is impossible.
Dr. Mannen also warns that using fire will destabilize the geothermal systems and potentially send the base into meltdown.
Optional Combat Encounter:
If the players move to destroy the plant, vines lash out to defend it. The plant reanimates its hosts, now near-unrecognizable, with more effort than before. These creatures relentlessly attack, no longer driven by instinct but by the plant’s primal will to survive.
- The Blooming Core (Environmental Boss)
- The plant attacks through lashing vines and releasing clouds of spore-like heat bursts, forcing Constitution checks to stave off infection.
- Strategic hazards include activation of dormant cryogenic systems to slow or burn the plant without blowing the base apart.
If defeated, the core collapses in on itself, destroying its vine network. However, Dr. Mannen may activate a failsafe alarm to alert corporate teams to reclaim the remains later. If captured, the core’s influence ceases temporarily, but survivors and players alike must live with what this means for its future weaponization.
Closing Scene:
Eli leads the players out as Station Forseti groans under its lingering failures. Whether battered by close calls or haunted by their moral decisions, the players leave the tundra with chilling knowledge of what lingers beneath the ice.
Eli breaks the silence as the flickering lights of the structure fade into the storm:
“Secrets never stay buried out here… it’s people like us who have to decide whether the truth gets out or stays locked under layers of lies. You did good today. For now.”
Players leave with unanswered questions about the scope of Notherion Corp’s ambitions but one certainty—that the frozen wilderness hides horrors no man was meant to unearth. Admittedly, this adventurous addition to our horror-hold was inspired by last week’s article on eco-horror. It is also written to correspond with our upcoming book, Dark Evolution. Sleep tight, and, well…eat your greens.
