Tactical Tuesday: Be the 1-Man Army

Becoming the One-Man Army

“Alright, tough guy (or gal), so you want to be the lone wolf, the shadow in the jungle, the one the enemy whispers about around their campfires? You’re looking to be a One-Man Army? Ok, fine. But it ain’t all glory and hero poses. You’ve got to be smart, ruthless, and a little bit scary. Most of all, you’ve got to stay alive. Here’s how you become a legend.”

The Lone Wolf Playstyle

“First rule of being a One-Man Army? You ain’t invincible. Yeah, you’re tough. Yeah, you’ve got skills. But you don’t have a squad backing you up with extra ammo and medkits. You’ve got to be everything all at once. The brain, the brawn, the scout, the punch line. Going solo means every move you make matters.”

Playing as a lone operative in a military TTRPG is about versatility and improvisation. You’re not just a fighter; you’re a strategist. You’re not just a sneak; you’re a diplomat. Being the One-Man Army means leaning into every skill you’ve got and learning to use your enemies’ weaknesses against them. Sure, it’s a tall order, but that’s what makes it worth playing.

Key Traits of a One-Man Army

  • Resourceful: You won’t always have the tools you need, so you better learn to make do. That tripwire becomes a booby trap, and that broken rifle? Now it’s a club.
  • Observant: See everything. Smell everything. Yes, that means noticing the footprints, the bent grass, and the faint smell of burning oil from an enemy generator. Every detail could save your skin.
  • Fearless (but not reckless): You’ve got to take risks others wouldn’t dare—but don’t be stupid about it. There’s a fine line between gutsy and suicidal.
  • Cunning: Outthinking the enemy is your bread and butter. If it’s a fair fight, you’re doing it wrong. Set traps, lure them into ambushes, and strike when they least expect it.
  • Relentless: You’re the type who doesn’t stop until the mission’s done. You’ve got to be unstoppable, not just in action but in attitude.

Roleplaying the Lone Operative

“Get in their heads, kid. A true One-Man Army doesn’t just blast their way through every obstacle like an action movie cliché. You’ve got layers. You’re a thinker. You’ve got fears, doubts, strengths, and regrets. Bring all that to the table.”

  1. The Code
Every lone operative needs a personal code. What drives you? Justice? Revenge? Loyalty to fallen comrades? Maybe this is just who you are, a predator unmatched in the jungle of war. Whatever it is, define it, stick to it, and wear it like armor.
  2. Silent, Not Soulless
Sure, you’ve got the grim exterior down. But cracks in the armor make the character human. Maybe you have a soft spot for kids or a secret fear of enclosed spaces. Those little details? They make you unforgettable.
  3. Play the Shadows
Whether you’re sneaking through jungle terrain or infiltrating a heavily guarded base, lean into being unseen and unheard. That’s where a true lone operator thrives.
  4. The Interrogator’s Art
You don’t just mow down enemies blindly. A captured patrol officer might spill supply routes with a little creative persuasion. A panicked engineer might reveal the generator’s weak point if you speak their language (maybe literally). Use wit and tactics to get what you need without resorting to anything heavy-handed.

Strategies for Survival

“If you ain’t breathing, you can’t finish the mission. Keep yourself moving, keep yourself thinking, and don’t get cocky out there.”

  1. Scout First, Strike Second
Never walk into a fight blind. Use binoculars, or get up in a tree if you’ve got to. Maybe the enemy has laid out traps or has sentries on overwatch. A true lone wolf sees the whole chessboard at all times.
  2. Blend Into the Wild
Make the jungle your ally. Cover your scent, rub mud on your skin to stay cool, and sleep in a place no one would think to look. You’re not just surviving out there; you’re thriving.
  3. Divide and Conquer
A squad of enemies? Big problem. But a lone guard wandering too far from the patrol? That’s an opportunity. Use distractions, fake tracks, or even a planted radio call to lure them one by one.
  4. Strike Fast, Disappear Faster
When you hit, hit hard. Leave no chance for retaliation. Then vanish. Don’t stick around congratulating yourself; the enemy won’t waste a second before regrouping.
  5. Know When to Run
Retreat isn’t failure; it’s strategy. If the fight’s not on your terms, make it that way. Draw them into an ambush or just melt back into the jungle. It’s your game, not theirs.

Tools of the Trade

“You don’t need a bazooka to be a one-man wrecking crew. You need smarts and a little creativity. Anything else? That’s a bonus.”

  • Silent Weapons
A good knife. A bow or crossbow. Suppressed firearms. You’re not here to start a war (well, not all at once). Quiet tools are your best friends.
  • Utility Gear
Wire, rope, explosives, tripwires, camo paint. You don’t just fight a war; you build one around your enemies.
  • The Jungle Itself
Never forget your greatest weapon is the environment. Set traps with what you find around you. A bent sapling and some vines? That’s a snare. Rocks and logs? Now you’ve got a deadly rolling trap.

Cunning Over Carnage

“Remember, kid, being a one-man army isn’t just about body counts. It’s about beating the odds stacked against you. Outwit the enemy, outlast the terrain, and come out the other side standing when no one else can.”

  1. Use Misdirection
Plant footprints in the mud leading one way, then take off the other. Leave bait supplies laced with red herrings. Get the enemy chasing ghosts.
  2. Enemy Intel
Every enemy you encounter is a potential goldmine of information. They’ve got schedules, maps, weak points. If you can get them talking, do it.
  3. Sabotage and Chaos
A supply dump might seem trivial, but set fire to it, and the whole operation grinds to a halt. Mess with their comms systems, cut their power, and sow confusion.
  4. Turn the Enemy’s Tools Against Them
Enemy radio? Now it’s your ears in their network. Their surveillance gear? Use it to track their own movements. Their food stores? A little sabotage goes a long way.

The Legend Lives On

“At the end of the day, being a one-man army isn’t about glory or medals. It’s about getting the job done. It’s about being the guy who’s ten steps ahead of everyone else, the one nobody sees coming until it’s too late. You’ve got what it takes. Now, go make them fear the name they only dare whisper.”
