Tactical Tuesday: Operation Ember Sky

Mission Briefing
Alright, listen up. This isn’t a training op, and it sure as hell isn’t a milk run. Intel just dropped, and it’s uglier than last week’s chow. Embedded insurgents are making their move, and our forward airbase, codenamed Blackridge, is square in their crosshairs. Blackridge is a lynchpin operation site, housing key aircraft, armored support, and a critical munition stockpile. If the base goes up, this entire sector is screwed nine ways to Sunday.
Here’s the bad news—we’ve intercepted chatter confirming a coordinated, multi-pronged assault planned for tonight, under cover of darkness. The insurgents know where to hit, and they’re bringing enough firepower to paint the night sky orange. They’ll hit us with rockets, mortars, and sabotage teams slipping through perimeter defenses. Come dawn, they’re planning to roll in backup to mop up whatever’s left standing.
Your job? Make sure Blackridge is still there at sunrise. This is going to be a long, ugly night, people. Load up on ammo, pack your nerves in steel, and stay sharp. The only way you’re walking out of this is if you make sure the other guy doesn’t.
The AO (Area of Operations)
Blackridge Airbase is perched in bad country. Jungle on one side, jagged mesas on the other, and a whole lot of exposed flat ground in between. Whoever picked this spot had a sense of humor and a death wish. The perimeter is rigged with concertina wire, but nightfall and adrenaline can make even the best defenses feel like wet tissue paper.
The base itself is a patchwork of supply depots, makeshift barracks, and reinforced hangars housing a mix of strike aircraft. Add in a critical munitions dump for good measure. One lucky hit there, and we’ll all be little red stains scattered across the valley. At the center of the base? Command post, humming with comms equipment and thin walls. It’s the only thing keeping this op coordinated. Lose it, and we’re flying blind.
Mission Objectives
- Fortify and Defend the Base
First priority is shoring up defenses and holding the line. Coordinate with base personnel to secure perimeter vulnerabilities, plug holes in the wire, and position fire teams where they can do the most damage. - Neutralize Rocket Teams
Insurgent rocket crews will rain hell down on the airstrip. If we can’t stop them, we’ll lose our aircraft and with it, any hope of staying combat-effective. Scouting teams must locate and take them out before they can deploy fully. - Secure the Munitions Dump
The bomb stockpile is both our greatest asset and our biggest liability. Insurgents are clever bastards. If they can’t blow it from the outside, they’ll send saboteurs to do the job from within. Identify and eliminate any threats before they detonate. - Survive Until Reinforcements Arrive
The clock is ticking. A quick reaction force (QRF) will hit the ground at sunrise, but until they show, you’re on your own. This isn’t about glory. It’s about holding ground, one desperate skirmish at a time.
Challenges in the Field
- The First Wave
The assault will start just after sundown with the crack of mortars and the whistle of rockets overhead. Fires are going to erupt, comms are going to get messy, and it’s going to take everything you’ve got to stay focused. Your team will have to make hard calls. Do you triage wounded, or do you push forward to restore defenses? - Sabotage from Within
It’s not just the guys shooting at us we need to worry about. Insurgents have infiltrated the base under the guise of support contractors or civilian workers. At some point during the chaos, they’ll strike from the inside. Who’s still loyal, and who’s waiting to gut you when your back’s turned? - Navigating the Dark
Once you leave the well-lit base for fire missions, you’ll be wandering through dense jungle and moonlit badlands. Every rustle of leaves and shadow feels like a trigger waiting to be pulled. Navigating back to base in one piece is half the battle. - Insurgent Coordination
These insurgents aren’t a ragtag group of rebels. They’re trained, disciplined, and armed with scarily accurate intel. Every move you make feels like they’re a step ahead. Your tactics must be precise to counter their chess moves. - Exhaustion and Fog of War
By 0300, you’ll have burned through your rations, your adrenaline, and maybe even some of your faith. The long haul is where endurance and wits count more than weaponry.
Possible Twists
- Inside Job
You uncover evidence that someone high up in base command has been feeding intel to the enemy. Do you expose them now, risking total chaos, or wait until the smoke clears? - The Decoy Maneuver
A “lull” in the fighting turns out to be bait. Insurgents use the quiet to flank your position, targeting command and control. Your team must scramble to stop them from sabotaging comms. - Airstrike Gone Wrong
The base’s strike aircraft manage an emergency takeoff under fire to support your defense efforts. But one is hit mid-air and crashes into a critical area of the base, creating more chaos than the insurgents themselves. - Unknown Asset
Midway through, reinforcements arrive ahead of schedule—but something’s off. They’re from a private contractor group, not official military. They offer help but demand a hefty price. Can they be trusted in the heat of battle? - Mutual Destruction
The insurgents make a play for the munitions dump, fully intending to blow it and level the entire base. If they trigger it, there’s a chance your evac will be delayed or pinched. Do you risk everything to stop them, or pull back and hope for the best?
The Final Stand
By the time sunrise casts its indifferent light on the shattered remains of Blackridge, every inch of you is going to hurt. If your team has held its ground, the QRF will find a base still standing, albeit bloodied and bruised. If not… well, they’ll find the charred wreckage of what used to be Blackridge Airbase, with nothing left but smoke and silence.
War is ugly. Survival even more so. But when the dust settles, you’ll know one hard-earned truth in your bones. You stared chaos in the face and didn’t blink. And if that doesn’t earn you a cold beer back at HQ, I don’t know what will.
