Tactical Tuesday: Just Hang’n Around
Just Hangin’ Around…
A pulp-military adventure hook for one unlucky bastard behind enemy lines.
You wake up like you’ve been hit by a freight train full of bad decisions. Pain’s the first thing to punch in—sharp, hot, and personal. Your shoulders scream, your arms feel like they’ve been stretched by medieval torture, and your leg? Let’s just say it’s got more wood in it than a lumberjack’s lunchbox.
You’re swaying. Not metaphorically. Literally. Thirty feet up, tangled in a tree like a Christmas ornament nobody wanted. Your chute’s snagged in the upper branches, flapping like a surrender flag in the wind. Rain slaps your face like it owes you money, and the taste of blood is thick in your mouth—metallic, bitter, and way too familiar.
It was supposed to be a clean jump. Blue skies, green zone, in and out. But something went sideways. Maybe the wind. Maybe the intel. Maybe Murphy’s Law decided to throw a party and you were the guest of honor.
Below, boots crunch through wet leaves. Voices—foreign, hostile, and way too close. They’re looking for you. Probably saw the chute drop. Lucky for you, it’s still dark. Unlucky for you, dawn’s coming fast, and when it does, you’ll be lit up like a neon sign in a blackout.
You’re not just some grunt with a bad landing. You’ve got microfilm tucked in your gear—intel that could flip the whole damn war. Photos, maps, secrets. The kind of stuff generals kill for and politicians deny ever existed. If they find it, it’s game over. If they find you, it’s worse.
You didn’t jump alone. Where’s your team? Dead? Gone? Moved on without you? Doesn’t matter. Right now, it’s just you, gravity, and a bunch of angry soldiers who’d love to hang your hide on a wall.
The Setup:
- You’re thirty feet up in a tree, wounded, bleeding, and behind enemy lines.
- You’ve got microfilm that could change the course of the war.
- The enemy is actively searching for you. Stealth might not be enough.
- Your leg’s a mess. Getting down won’t be quiet or easy.
- You need to escape, evade, and find help—fast.
The Tone:
Think gritty pulp, soaked in sweat, blood, and sarcasm. You’re the kind of soldier who’s seen too much, survived too long, and still cracks jokes when the bullets fly. You’re not here to be a hero. You’re here to finish the job and maybe live long enough to regret it.
GM Notes:
- Drop this into any 20th-century war setting, Cold War thriller, or sci-fi battlefield.
- Decide who the PC was supposed to rendezvous with. Are they nearby? Captured? Dead?
- The microfilm can be replaced with a data chip, alien artifact, or encrypted tablet in sci-fi settings.
- The enemy is smart, organized, and closing in. They’re not just cannon fodder—they’re hunters.
- The tree escape should be a tense, high-risk moment. One wrong move and it’s over.
Optional Twists:
The PC’s radio crackles to life—someone’s out there. But are they friend or foe?
The microfilm is booby-trapped. If the PC dies, it self-destructs.
One of the enemy soldiers is a double agent who might help… or betray.
