Reflections on Mythic Con™

By T. Glenn Bane
This past weekend, I had the privilege of attending Mythic Con in Charlotte, NC, and what a weekend it was! Conventions like this are always a whirlwind of excitement, creativity, and connection, and Mythic Con was no exception. It’s not just about the games (though they’re a big part of it)—it’s about the people, the stories, and the memories we create together.
One of the highlights for me was reconnecting with old friends. Some of these folks have been playing games with me since I slid into my very first convention many years ago. Sure, we all look a little different now, but when we sit down to talk or roll dice, it’s like no time has passed at all. There’s something magical about those friendships that pick up right where they left off, no matter how much time has gone by. And, of course, meeting new friends and welcoming them into the fold is always a joy. That’s the real treasure of conventions—building and strengthening this incredible community.
The Players Are the Real Stars
I knew Legacy of Lucha Libre™, my newest Pocket World title, was something special, but I was blown away by how quickly players immersed themselves in the world. Watching them bring the game to life with their energy and creativity was humbling and inspiring. They took the game to heights I hadn’t even imagined, and it reminded me why I love doing this so much. The players are the real stars—they’re the ones who make these stories unforgettable.
The Food Challenge: A Convention Tradition
Now, let’s talk about one of the lesser-known challenges of conventions: feeding yourself. If you’ve followed my adventures, you might remember my experiment with MREs at ConCarolinas earlier this year. It was a fun (and surprisingly effective) way to avoid the hassle of eating out. Unfortunately, I dropped the ball this time and forgot to order MREs in advance.
Luckily, one of my favorite Mexican restaurants, Zapata’s, was right next to the event hotel. Zapata’s always makes me feel like a welcome guest, whether I’m dining alone or with friends. Their food is consistently excellent, and it’s a little slice of comfort in the chaos of a convention. The rest of the time, I survived on Pop-Tarts and power bars—because, let’s face it, I don’t always make the best food decisions when I’m rushing around.
The Dealer’s Room: A Balancing Act
The dealer’s room is always a temptation, and this year was no different. There’s something about wandering through rows of books, games, and treasures that stirs the imagination. But this time, I made a conscious effort to spend more time with friends than filling my bag with goodies. Don’t worry, though—I still managed to do a little of both.
Looking Ahead
As I reflect on the weekend, I’m filled with gratitude—for the friends I reconnected with, the new ones I made, and the players who brought Legacy of Lucha Libre™ to life in ways I’ll never forget. These conventions are more than just events—they’re a celebration of creativity, community, and the stories that bring us together.
Next time I’m at a convention, I hope to see some of you there. Whether it’s shaking hands, rolling dice, or just sharing a laugh, I look forward to making more memories with this amazing community. Until then, keep telling your stories, and I’ll see you in the ring—or at the table.

this is a great recap. I wish I had gone. Next time?
Playing the Sacred flame in the luche libre game was a treat! I enjoyed the system and have purchased the pocket world since the con. It was very nice to meet you, and I hope to play with you again in the future!
You really made the character your own. I was glad to have you at the table. If you look back on the free giveaway page on this site, you will find a Lucha Libre theme song there. I look forward to the next game.
Here is the song, “The Mask of the Hero”. https://scaldcrow.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/The-Mask-of-the-Hero-1.mp3
