Mazes & Mondays: Embered Ruin

TTRPG Adventure: The Embered Ruin

Setting:
The adventure takes place in the ruins of an ancient city-state, Vyrakhal, recently uncovered near the volcanic town of Ashenforge. The ruins are said to be cursed, filled with deadly traps and spectral guardians, but they also hold the promise of priceless relics and forbidden knowledge.

Adventure Overview:

The party is hired by a reclusive scholar, Drayla Veyne, to retrieve a legendary artifact known as the Pyrestone Shard, a relic said to hold the power to control volcanic eruptions. The artifact is hidden deep within the ruins, protected by ancient traps and spectral guardians. However, a fanatical group known as the Cult of the Embered Eye has also learned of the artifact and seeks to claim it for their apocalyptic rituals.

Scene Breakdown:

Opening Hook (30 minutes):
The party meets Drayla Veyne in a shadowy corner of the Molten Anvil Tavern in Ashenforge. She explains the importance of the Pyrestone Shard and offers a generous reward for its retrieval. She warns the party of the dangers: the ruins are cursed, and the Cult of the Embered Eye is already on the move. The party must decide whether to accept the mission and prepare for the journey.

  • Skill Checks: Persuasion (to negotiate a higher reward), Insight (to gauge Drayla’s honesty), History (to learn more about the Pyrestone Shard).

Exploration and Traps (1 hour):
The party ventures into the ruins of Vyrakhal, navigating crumbling corridors and ancient traps. The air is thick with ash, and the walls are etched with glowing runes that pulse faintly. They encounter a series of challenges:

  1. Trap Room: A chamber filled with pressure plates and dart traps. The party must work together to disarm the traps or find a safe path through.
    • Skill Checks: Perception (to spot traps), Sleight of Hand (to disarm traps), Acrobatics (to avoid triggering traps).
  2. Puzzle Door: A massive stone door blocks their path, inscribed with a riddle in an ancient language. Solving the riddle requires teamwork and creativity.
    • Skill Checks: Arcana (to decipher the runes), Intelligence (to solve the riddle).

Confrontation with the Cult (1 hour):
As the party reaches the inner sanctum, they find the Cult of the Embered Eye performing a dark ritual to claim the Pyrestone Shard. The cultists are led by a fanatical pyromancer, Kaelor Vryn, who wields fire magic and commands spectral guardians.

  • Combat Encounter: The party must fight the cultists and their spectral allies while preventing the ritual from completing. The room is filled with hazards, such as collapsing pillars and pools of molten lava.
    • Skill Checks: Athletics (to avoid falling debris), Arcana (to disrupt the ritual), Intimidation (to demoralize the cultists).

Climactic Decision (30 minutes):
With the cult defeated, the party claims the Pyrestone Shard. However, they must decide what to do with it:

  1. Return it to Drayla Veyne: Fulfill their contract and receive their reward.
  2. Keep it for Themselves: Use its power or sell it to the highest bidder.
  3. Destroy It: Prevent anyone from using its dangerous power.

Each choice has consequences, shaping the party’s reputation and future adventures.

Key NPCs:

  • Drayla Veyne: A reclusive scholar with a hidden agenda. She believes the Pyrestone Shard can save Ashenforge from future eruptions but may have ulterior motives.
  • Kaelor Vryn: A fanatical pyromancer of the Embered Eye, determined to use the shard to awaken an ancient power.

Rewards:

  • Gold and Artifacts: Depending on their choices, the party can earn gold, magical items, or the Pyrestone Shard itself.
  • Reputation: Their actions will influence their standing with factions like the Guild of Ashenforge and the Cult of the Embered Eye.

This rewritten adventure retains the same structure but introduces more original names and a unique flavor. Let me know if you’d like to refine it further!
